Rockford Area Money Saving Blog

My good friend Beth shared a "local" blog with me today and I was so excited to read it.  This blog has posts regarding stores and deals specifically in the Rockford area.  I do a lot of my shopping in the Rockford area and while I read a lot of money saving blogs, this is the first local one that I have found that regularly posts deals and sales in the Rockford area.  If you are in the Rockford area, please check out The Pinch-a-Penny Nook.  I think you will enjoy what you read.

I have added this blog to the list of money saving blogs on my sidebar so feel free to link over to it often.

Coupon useage increases 27% in 2009!

Here's a great article that I wanted to post about the current state of our economy and the increase in couponing.  The source of this article is the website CouponInfoNow.com.  Here's what the article has to say about our coupon useage:

Spurred by a sour economy, consumers used 27% more coupons in 2009. This renewed interest sparked the first annual increase in coupon use since 1992, and drove redemptions to 3.3 billion. The rising trend started in October of 2008, coinciding with news of the US financial crisis. That led to five consecutive quarters of double-digit growth (versus the same period of the previous year).

While consumers used an amazing $3.5 billion worth of coupons, brands did their part by supplying an unprecedented number of incentives. Despite the tight economy, marketers boosted the number of coupons available to the highest level recorded since Inmar has been tracking the data. Brands issued 367 billion coupons, at an average face value of $1.44 – an investment that strongly indicated that they were committed to promotion.

But even as brands increased the number of coupons available, they did try to mitigate the cost of increased redemption by maintaining face values and keeping expiration periods in check. In 2009, face values declined by a penny, reversing a multi-year trend of increasing values. Expiration periods were shortened by 10% last year, despite years of virtually no change.

During the first half of the year, coupons for food categories drove the increases in distribution and redemption. Consumers were responding to higher food prices and a growing concern for making ends meet in an economy that looked very dismal. Marketers were using coupons to minimize losses to low price competitors, such as store brands.

That particularly strong first half combined with solid growth throughout the year to make food category coupons the leading driver for both distribution and redemption growth in 2009.

By mid-year, the economic future looked less grim. Then, coupons shifted from primarily being a way to provide essentials like food toward being a way to enable small household luxuries. That’s when redemption growth moved to non-food categories. Second and third quarter both saw coupon redemption percent changes in the mid-forties (compared to the same period the previous year) for non-food category coupons.

Of course, we don’t know how long this will continue. But it does appear that the American public has been fundamentally changed by the events of 2009. The economic downturn instilled a drive to be smart and frugal about spending and coupons definitely have a role in fulfilling it.

For the foreseeable future, coupons are back on shoppers’ radar.

FREE Men's Gillette Body Wash & Rimmel Mascara @ Target

In the 2/21 PG insert there's a coupon for $4.00 off two Gillette Antiperspirant or Body Wash.  The coupon does not specify a size with the exception of trial sizes excluded.  Target has 8.4 oz bottles of Gillette Body Wash and 8.4 oz bottles of 2 in 1 Gillette Hair & Body Wash and these are priced at just $1.99 each.  Use these coupons on two bottles and get both for FREE (with a couple cents overage)!  These were a little hard to find for me, I had to search around quite awhile before I located them on an end of the body wash aisle in a hanging, shelf type display.

Since you are going to be at Target getting FREE body wash, why not clip the $3.00 off ANY Rimmel Mascara coupon out of the March AY magazine and score some FREE mascara also?  The cheapest Rimmel Mascara at the Target that I went to was $2.24 so I scored .76 in overage on that one!

Coupon Shopping with Kids

Shopping with kids can sometimes be a daunting task alone but add in trying to work the deals using coupons and things can get kinda crazy!  For my own sanity, I try to shop alone when I can, but for the last 3.5 years my husband has been a full time student as well as worked full time so I had to learn to be creative when heading to the store.  I have some tricks that I use when shopping with my 5 year old that I would like to share with you and maybe make your shopping trip a little easier.

First, he is designated my coupon collector.  He's in charge of finding all the "blinkie" machines up and down the aisles as we make our way through the store.  This serves two very useful purposes.  It keeps him occupied and by the time we leave the store I have a beautiful stack of nice coupons to sort through.  Even if they are ones that I can't or won't use, I can trade them at ecoupons.com for coupons that I can and will use.

Next, we play games similar to "I spy" and try to find things as we walk the aisles.  I tell him something on our list and he searches for it.  He's so proud of himself when he locates the item on our list that we are searching for.

He's in charge of the calculator when it's not being used by me.  He carries it and watches price tags in the aisles.  When we make a stop he trys to match the price tags to what he punches into the calculator.

He's my price checker.  He loves to take things up to the price checker in the aisle and scan the bar code for the price check.

He's my bagger.  Since I mostly go to the self check out lane when I do my grocery shopping, he stands at the end of the belt with our re-useable shopping bags just waiting for our groceries to slide down to him.  This is where I have to be very careful about sending my breads and other delicate items down the belt!

If you have older kids that get bored easily with shopping you can give them jobs also.  Why not give them a list of simple items to pick up throughout the store?

If you have smaller kids, you can always do some extra things to keep them occupied as well.  Try those cute carts that are designed to look like a car or truck,  as you push them around have them pretend they are driving through the grocery store making stops to pick up "loads" for their shipment.

I think that doing these activities makes your shopping trip more peaceful by keeping the kids occupied while shopping, but it also teaches them valuable lessons.  I think coupons are a vitial part of any household budget and teaching kids at an early age to be frugal is a step in the right direction.  As they see you shopping with coupons and getting the most out of your dollar, they will learn by example and hopefully be smart shoppers when they grow up.

Free samples and coupons @ Wal-mart.com

If you head on over to the Walmart website you can request some new free samples.  Olay Total Effects body wash, Tide plus Febreeze, UnderJams, Crest 3D whitestrips and Fekkai hair products are the current samples that you can request.  Remember that great coupons usually accompany these free samples, so even if you aren't excited about the free sample, the coupons are worth it.  Every so often Walmart surprises me and sends a full size sample when I request their samples.  Don't forget that you can request two samples if you have an extra address that you can use.

Kroger electronic & printable coupons

Here's a link for some electronic and printable Kroger coupons.  Kroger just switched over to these electronic or "digital" coupons, as they call them, so I am not familiar with what types of coupons you will see or any of the details with using them.  I would assume they are the same as any other electronic coupons with just loading them to your card and shopping.  I have added a link to the Kroger digial coupons on the "electronic coupon links" section of my sidebar.  In my area, Kroger is also known as Hilander.

Is coupon clipping worth it?

Thanks to the blog Common Sense With Money for posting this great article over at The Wall Street Journal. This author does a little math and figuring on if coupon clipping is really worth the time and efforts.  He estimates that if coupon clipping were a part time job it would pay $86.40 per hour after taxes.

I think I would have to agree with his logic and his figures.  I have seen huge results in my own family budget that are the equivalent of this figure.  If you keep organized and stay on track you WILL see results in your family budget that are similar to these figures.  Sometimes it does feel like a part time job and there are other things I would rather be doing but now that I have some solid figures to base my "hourly rate" on, I have the incentive to keep going, stay organized and always be on the lookout for my next deal.

So, whether you are saving for vacation, college or just trying to get out of debt and stay out of debt, coupon clipping is worth your time and effort!

Why coupon inserts can sometimes be different

This subject has recently come up as a topic of discussion with some other mom's that I talk couponing with.  If you find yourself wondering why newspapers and regions of the country have different coupons in the inserts you might want to read this article.  It explains a lot of the reasons why you might receive certain coupons and your neighbor might get different ones.

Office Max - Max Perks Rewards Program

As you know by my previous post here, I signed up for the Office Max - Max Perks Rewards program.  Office Max just sent me a coupon for $25.00 off a $75.00 or more purchase for being a member.   The coupon expires 2/27/2010.  This coupon is going to work great with my $70.00 in Max Perks Rewards that I received for purchasing my paper through Office Max.  I think I will buy some printer ink using this coupon to get even more for my Max Perks Rewards.

If you would like to receive Max Perks Rewards and coupons like this, there's a link in my original post to sign up.  Why wouldn't you, it's FREE!

Coupons at the Post Office

Next time you stop by the Post Office to grab some stamps, ask for a change of address kit.  Inside the Mover's Guide: Official Change of Address Kit are coupons!  The current kit expires 4/30/10 so these change often and you might want to remember to ask for a new one after this expiration date for different coupons.

The current kit that I have has some various advertisements with various coupons, but there's two that are worth mentioning.  There is a coupon for 10% off your next purchase at Lowe's Home Improvement stores.  This coupon is valid at any Lowe's store and expires 6/15/2010.  The other one is two coupons for 10% off any single, regular-priced item from Best Buy (certain categories only).  One of the 10% Best Buy coupons is on major or small appliances, the other coupon (10% also) lists many categories from the store like home theater, computer accessories, digital cameras & camcorders, etc.  While these don't seem like high value coupons, if there's something you really need from one of these stores, 10% is better than nothing at all!

A big thanks to my mom - a postal worker, for pointing out these coupons to me!

2/7/10 Coupon Preview

There are going to be 4 coupon inserts in this Sunday's paper.  This would be a great week to pick up an extra paper or two.  If you'd like a preview of what's going to be included, check out this link.  Remember, coupons vary by region and by paper, so what you get might not be exactly as this list states but this is a good guide of what you might expect to see Sunday morning.

I stopped in at my local Farm & Fleet today to see if the winter items were on clearance.  I found that all the winter clothing, including outerwear, is clearanced down to 50% off.  I always get my son's winter coat and snowpants for NEXT year at this time of the year because the savings are amazing.  I could have held out a little longer to see if they were going to be reduced down lower, maybe to 75% but there was only one coat in the style that I wanted in his size so I splurged a little bit and got it now.  Stop in over at Farm & Fleet and check out what they've got!
